Nofer Institute of Occupational Medicine (NIOM)

 Poland

NIOM is the leading institute in the field of occupational and environmental health in Poland having status of WHO Collaborating Centre. NIOM maintains links with many international organizations and institutions.

The toxicologists from NIOM for many years have been involved in assessment of genotoxic/mutagenic (comet assay, micronucleus test, mouse lymphoma assay), carcinogenic, reproductive, neurotoxic, pulmonary, pro-oxidative, pro-inflammatory effects of chemicals. NIOM staff participated in 94 international grants (30 granted by EC). Currently 27 international grants are performed in NIOM. Scientists from NIOM participate/d in several EU funded projects on nanosafety issues: NanoInteract, Impart and Nanotox, NANOGENOTOX, RAIAP. They developed considerable skills in cytotoxicity (different viability assays) and genotoxicity testing (comet and micronucleus tests) in vitro1. NIOM has also unique capability of performing inhalation exposure of rodents (GLP system for these studies is planned to be implemented by the end of 2010). The other field of expertise is studying oxidative stress at gene and protein level.
