Joint Research Centre of the European Commission (JRC)


The JRC is a Directorate-General of the European Commission under the responsibility of the European Commissioner for Research. The JRC comprises seven scientific Institutes located on five separate sites in Belgium, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands and Spain.

The mission of the JRC is to provide customer-driven scientific and technical support for the conception, development, implementation and monitoring of EU policies. As a service of the European Commission, the JRC functions as a reference centre of science and technology for the Union. Close to the policy-making process, it serves the common interest of the Member States, while being independent of special interests, whether private or national. Main tasks in the project: The contribution from the JRC will come primarily from its Institute for Health and Consumer Protection (IHCP) and its Institute for Environment and Sustainability (IES) as well as the Institute for Reference Materials and Measurements (IRMM). The JRC will play important roles concerning the establishment of the reference nanomaterials Repository for and the radio-activation of nanomaterials biokinetic studies and their dispersion in various test matrices.
