The Algorithmic Bioinformatics (ABI) group is located and the department of mathematics and computer science of the Freie Universität Berlin. Freie Universität is one of the eleven universities to have been successful in all three lines of funding in the German government's Excellence Initiative in 2012.

The Algorithmic Bioinformatics (ABI) group is located at the department of mathematics and computer science of the Freie Universität Berlin. The ABI group focuses on the development of novel algorithms and data structures for problems in the analysis of biomedical mass data. In particular, the group is interested in developing mathematical models for analyzing large genomic sequences, especially in the context of next generation sequencing (NGS), and data derived from mass spectrometry experiments, for example for detecting differential expression of proteins between different conditions (e.g., healthy and diseased). The developed algorithms and data structures are all integrated into the open-source software libraries SeqAn and OpenMS.

The main task of the Algorithmic Bioinformatics group in the MARINA project is to develop analysis pipelines for the robust quantitative analysis of the proteomics, metabolomics, and transcriptomics data sets generated by our project partners and integration of these quantitative omics data into one or more comprehensive databases.
