The Institute of Energy and Environmental Technology (IUTA e.V.), founded 1989, is an independent private-non-profit research institute associated with the University of Duisburg-Essen. IUTA has more than 150 employees and is funded by its research activities. The Air Quality & Sustainable Nanotechnology (AQSN) unit, led by Thomas Kuhlbusch, is working on the development and employment of particle measurement techniques to be used in various research activities. These cover research areas such as NP release during the life cycle, exposure assessments of workers and the public, environmental transport in air, water and soils, fine dust emissions, source apportionment and abatement strategy evaluations. The most recent developments in particle measurement techniques are a small portable particle size monitor (developed in the framework of FP7-EU NanoDevice) and the thermophoretic personal sampler for nanoobjects, led by Christof Asbach.
